People In Music History
Wolf, Hugo (1860-1903) Austrian composer chiefly of songs, usually grouped by
their literary sources, e.g., Italian songbook and Spanish songbook (German
translations of Italian, Spanish poems), Marike songs (57), and songs to texts
by Goethe (51). These are reckoned as a peak within the general German Romantic
type of song; as in Schumann's, the piano parts are very important. A few of
the songs also have orchestral (as well as piano) versions of the
accompaniments. Wolf also wrote opera The Corregidor; Italian Serenade; and a
few other works. Lived largely in poverty; proved himself unfitted to
conducting; was an aggressive music critic (extolling Wagner, decrying Brahms);
became insane in 1897 and was confined from 1898 until death.
